Resilience

As a first generation Asian American, I have been fortunate to have an education that helps me put things in perspective, while striving to be strong and independent without forgetting my culture. I believe that there are struggles within Asian females especially in older generations that they cannot escape due to the lack of an education and the way they grew up. This eventually becomes ingrained in the future generations thereafter. I want to present some of the common misconceptions and hidden struggles that females within the Asian culture deal with using design, photography, and fashion.

Typical fashion photos lack meaning beyond marketing purposes and aesthetic qualities. This past summer I came across an Asian Male “Entertainment” magazine, which claimed to be promoting Asian females in a positive manner using fashion. I found it rather degrading and deceptive since they turned professional females into “stereotypical imagery.” My passion lies in balancing fashion, beauty, and culture. I want to showcase a positive twist on serious issues that are often overlooked and need to be reanalyzed. We have enough negative imagery; I think it’s time to reverse the desensitization.
